Dear friends of Washington County Tea Party,
I (Christine Keller) just returned from Little Rock where I attended the 10th Amendment rally and press conference at the Capitol. Dr. Jim Beckman, the Washington County Tea Party treasurer, was also in attendance, and we took some notes.
There were at least 100 people there besides the press, and the room was crammed full with standing room only and people spilling out into the hallway. Representative Dan Greenberg (R-District 31), Bryan King (R-District 91), and Donna Hutchinson (R-District 98) spoke to the crowd (mostly tea party folks) and the media explaining the reasons why the Obamacare bill is bad for Arkansas and then took questions.
We were told that some of the policy concerns are: 10 million people will lose their current insurance, employers right here in Arkansas will be taxed which will kill jobs, and there is funding for abortions.
(this is directly against our Arkansas Constitution Amendment 68)
The Constitutional concerns include the fact that Congress does not have the power to force people to buy anything. The commerce clause has limitations, and this bill is clearly outside of those. We were told that Arkansas is already running a deficit now, after Governor Beebe inherited a surplus, and this health care bill will add yet another $100-$200 million in debt to the state every year!
Donna Hutchinson pointed out that while the federal government is able to pay their portion of the health care costs with "funny money" which they print, the State of Arkansas will be required to pay with real money that it does not have.
When the press conference ended, almost the entire crowd moved down to Governor Beebe's office, where he just happened to be leaving for a funeral, we were told. However, he was completely surrounded by the press and Tea Party folks and was forced to answer some questions.
Jim Holt spoke for the crowd [it was Jim Holt's idea to take the matter to the Governor's office] and told the governor that this crowd was upset about the health care bill and wanted to know what he was going to do to protect the Constitution and Arkansans from this bill.
Listen closely: The governor looked at Jim Holt and told him that he respected him and that he would not lie to Jim. He then said that he is not lying about this: he will NOT EVER call a special session of the legislature or pass any legislation that would opt Arkansas out of the health care mandates. HE WILL NOT, and you can count on it, no matter what you Arkansans want!!
It doesn't matter that Arkansans do NOT want this health care bill, or that our senators and some representatives refused to listen to us and voted for it anyway. Someone in the crowd called out that he has the authority and the duty to call a special session to stop this bill from being forced on Arkansas. He replied that it would cost $60,000-$70,000 per day to do that, and even if he was able to get a bill or resolution passed, it would not do any good!!!
So Governor Beebe is fine with having $100-$200 million PER YEAR of mandated costs from the federal government forced on Arkansans, but will not call a special session to try to stop it. Even if the legislature passed such a bill, he would do nothing to enforce it.
A man standing next to me called out, "Is this bill constitutional?" The governor answered clearly, "Yes." !!!!!!!!! Did you hear that??? Governor Beebe believes that the Obamacare bill is Constitutional!! Do not let him ever forget that he said that. Someone in the crowd called out all the amendments that this bill clearly violates including the 4th (privacy issues), the 9th, the 10th, and so on, but he had no answer for that, nor does he care what is Constitutional.
Someone asked him why he doesn't demand that our attorney general join the other 14 states in filing a lawsuit, to which he again replied that he WOULD NOT do that.
This is a direct violation of his Oath of Office in which He SWORE to uphold the U.S. Constitution and that of Arkansas as Well, including the protection of the citizens of Arkansas against abuse of power by the Federal Government - in our Republican form of Government, the States are part of the checks and balances over flagrant abuse of Federal power because the States are Sovereign units per the U.S. Constitution
There you have it, folks! I still say he needs to be deluged with e-mails, letters, and phone calls even though he will not listen. All of us in the crowd signed the guest book in his office and left comments.
I signed Washington County Tea Party's name there so you all the people in the Washington County Tea Party had a voice there, not that he listens to us anyway. I don't know about you, but this whole incident made my blood boil. We have a tyrannical and out-of-control federal government, and a state government that is willing to go along with it!
Governor Beebe is running for re-election, and he is opposed by Jim Keet. Perhaps we need to learn more about him and do what we can to get Beebe out of office. I'm just sayin'...
There is hope though! Secure Arkansas has filed their ballot initiative on health care freedom with the attorney general's office and is awaiting his approval before we can proceed with gathering the necessary signatures to get this on the ballot in November. Folks, this is our ONE chance to go around Governor Beebe, Dustin McDaniel, and the state legislature since they will not stand up for us. We will simply go around them and write our own law exempting ourselves from federal health care legislation.
Secure Arkansas would appreciate your phone calls to Dustin McDaniel's office at (501) 682-2007 or 1-800-482-8982 asking that they expedite approval of the language on the health care freedom ballot initiative. They were not too polite to me when I called last time, but do not let that intimidate you. They work for you. Once that language is approved, we will need "all hands on deck." We will need every single patriot and freedom-minded person in the state working to gather 100,000 signatures by the end of June. We can do this!
This e-mail is long now, so we will send another e-mail tomorrow explaining yet another ray of hope we have in resisting Obamacare. Do not be discouraged, folks, because our clueless and spineless and out-of-touch government has only stirred a sleeping giant and spurred us into action. Turn your anger into action, and do NOT give up! We will continue to speak up for the Constitution and common sense, and, trust me,
YOU ARE NOT ALONE in your anger and frustration!
